Things I Wish I Knew About Postpartum...

Think it’s all over when baby is born? Think again. And sometimes, not everyone tells you QUITE how it’s going to be postpartum. So here’s some things I wish I knew about postpartum…

ONE MONTH IN

Those contractions you so remember having during labour? Yeah you’ll have some milder ones for weeks after too. WHAT IS THAT EVEN ABOUT?!

Forever feeling like all your insides are just going to fall out of your vagina at every.single.movement.

And that sensation of the placenta being delivered? I’m not sure I’ll ever ever forget that… (still thinking about it four months in!)

Still looking 14 weeks pregnant, 7 weeks in.

The inbetween wardrobe stage, where you can’t stand the sight of your maternity clothes but also can’t fit into your old wardrobe, so you end up ordering half of ASOS and returning far more than you’d like to admit, and only keeping the baggiest joggers around. This is the new minimal style. Mum style I guess. Is it chic? Certainly not with baby sick on it.

That first trip to the toilet. Just, wow.

Those granny pants that you cried about as you put them in your hospital bag with the plan to throw them all away, will become your go to’s. Lace lingerie say what sorry?

How big your boobs can actually get when your milk comes in. And the pain. Oh the pain.

Cough? Sneeze? Yeah, you’ll most definitely piss yourself.

FOUR MONTHS IN

How long ago was it that I showered? Washed my hair? Is this life forever now?

Postpartum hair loss really is real. And a bitch.

It was nice having my baby next to me each night, but it’s also nice having my bedside table back.

Still peeing when sneezing…

I slept for 11 hours, yet somehow I still look like I’ve only slept an hour.

Right this REALLY is the last time I wear my maternity leggings…

I never knew that putting a load of washing into the machine was the five minutes to myself that I would enjoy so much.

I remember the time that I cried over the high waisted knickers I had to pack in my hospital bag. Now I cry when they’re in the wash.

Time somehow feels like it’s going so quickly but then also only feels like yesterday when I was in labour.

When do you stop saying postpartum?

However many people tell you that you’d see your body differently, you’ll never quite believe it until it happens. Whilst it jiggles about and has to be tucked into your knickers, and you’ll often wonder how you got so much wider, you’ll love that it was home to your baby, it kept them safe and it did such incredible things.

And finally, wine still solves everything. Everything.
